I received this e-mail this morning from my major. Sometimes, work gets crappy and I feel like I do everything wrong. Then I get reminder that it's not all that bad...

I just received a phone call from John Smith. Mr. Smith was a passenger in a car which was involved in a crash at ((location)) on 10-04-08. This crash was handled by you as I am sure you remember. Mr. Smith was extremely complimentary of how you handled the crash. He used the words respectful, compassionate, kind and patient while describing your performance. He also mentioned it was nice to deal with officers like you to reaffirm his confidence in law enforcement after having some less than favorable contacts.
Not a bad days work for you I would say. You show up at a bad situation where a man and his fiancé' are injured in a crash by a non-insured, no D.L. driver and turn it into a situation where they have their opinion of law enforcement changed for the better. This is a good example of the impact we have on people in every type of situation. Great job and thanks for representing our department so well.
Major ____ (Deputy Chief of Police)
This e-mail was also sent to my current sergeant and to the lieutenant over patrol. :)

Excellent!!! Having been in a couple of accidents yourself recently, you bring a unique perspective to it.
