I Need A Hobby

I need something I can do that I truly enjoy, that is not police related. Something calming, and preferably, something I can do with other people. Something I can do where I'll be forced to meet new people.

My mom keeps telling me to find some group here in Kansas City to join. Like a photography group or something of that nature. She suggested photography because I love photography. I admire it so much. However, I don't think I'm all that great at taking pictures. For one, I don't have a camera. At least, I can't find my digital camera, and I can't find the cord that hooks up to the computer to download images. No, I don't think I'm very good at photography at all, but I can go into a museum and admire pictures and paintings all day.

I worked off duty at the Church of the Resurrection last week. I've been to that church a couple of times before and I really enjoyed the services. I met a girl there during my off duty job, who's my age, who volunteers for the youth group. It was nice to talk with someone who isn't a cop, who doesn't know much about that lifestyle, and who has a genuine heart for God and other people. I plan on working more off duty there in the future and hopefully I can chat with her more and get connected with people. The off duty job encouraged me to continue to attend one of their services, so I attempted to go to church this weekend. However, I didn't quite make it. I ended up getting a late DUI arrest last night (around 4:30am) and didn't get off work until after 7am (with none of my paperwork done). There is an evening service at the church on Saturday and Sunday nights at 5pm. I had decided to go Sunday night (tonight) and ended up sleeping through the services. Typically I wake up at around 4pm, which would've given me plenty of time to get ready. However, I must've been exhausted from last nights work to sleep until after 5pm. *Sigh*. Oh well. I'm not working off duty this Wednesday, maybe they have a bible study I can join in on.

This church also has an orchestra. I would love to join the orchestra, however, they rehearse on Wednesday nights. That's not such a big deal if I had a set schedule that allowed me to join. But, because I'm a cop and my schedule constantly is changing, I don't think I can join their orchestra.

That's another one of my problems. How can I join a group that meets at specific dates and times when my shift is always changing?

This church has a ton of different services so no matter what time I work or days I have off, I can always find a service to attend. It's just the smaller groups, which are designed to be more intimate, I would have issues with since they meet at specific days and times. Grr.

Oh well, I'll continue to find a way.

i suggest you still look into joining one of the groups. b/c if you get pugged in even just for a little while and then your schedule changes you have still had an opportunity to get to know someone and you can still get together w/ them when you're schedule has changed.

so what kind of off duty work are you doing at a church. sorry if you've already taked about it. homeschooling has taken over my life..

Lol, i haven't already explained it. and trust me, i understand about being busy. this chuch is quite large and they have a very large youth program (it's the size of a small church, a couple hundred kids). sometimes, the kids get rowdy and so the church has asked to have cops in uniform just playing as security in case things get out of hand. it doesnt make a WHOLE lot of sense because this church has its own security...

really, we're just fancy hall monitors, making sure everyone is in their small groups or service. i like it because i can stand in and listen to the music and listen to the sermons if i want to.

That's a good gig you have going there. Aren't you moving soon to the new place? Or have you already?
