Redemption

Today I had EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operation Course) training with the deparment. Now, I must admit, after crashing one of the vehicles during my last EVOC class, I was terrified I'd do it again.
But, I didn't! I did pretty damn well. I was lucky because 3 of the 4/5 courses that we did were the ones I had from my previous course. Plus, I was partnered up with this officer who has a very outgoing and funny personality. We got along quite well.
The training was at the Kansas Speedway in KCK (Kansas City, KS) as opposed to the old training spot at Arrowhead Stadium in KCMO (Kansas City, MO) because of renovations. Anyway, it was good. We had lane change exercises (speeds of about 70mph), stopping exercises at high speeds, the pods (which are effin hard, it's a lot of parallel parking, backwards driving, all that). But, I did good. The pursuit driving course was intricate and a lot of fun. I probably reached speeds up to about 70 to 80 mph. And did I hit anything or even spin out? Nope! I am quite proud.

Basically EVOC is like driver's ed for cops. It's what everyone wants to do with the cars, but it isn't quite legal. And it's quite educational. We need to know how to properly drive at high rates of speed, whether we're going to a code call or chasing someone. Plus, did I mention it's a hell of a lot of fun? :-D

Here's a fun EVOC story-

I'm driving the pods. The hardest course out there. It requires a lot of reverse driving, parallel parking, use of a turn signal. If you hit or even touch a cone, or forget to signal, you have to start all over. Now, I've driven the pods before, back when I was in the academy, but let me just say it doesn't get easier the second time doing it. So, my partner in crime first drives the pods. He's having some issues... The parallel parking, backing up the course, that sort of thing. But, he does fairly well. Then it's my turn. The first time through I do it completely clean. My best part was the paralell parking... Then the jealousy starts rising.

Me- *drives it really well, this time I'm getting timed and judged*
Training Officer- Good job! You're doing an excellent job!
Me- *smiles, all proud, happy I haven't hit anything*
Partner- *looks over jealous* Bitch
Me- *looks over* What did you just call me? *Boom Boom Boom!*
Partner- You hit those cones...
Training Officer- Start over.

Lol, we laughed about that for quite some time. He really is a good guy and it was nice to get away from the training atmosphere and just enjoy doin my thing. Plus, we had some good talks. Especially on the way back (it's about a 30 minute drive back to the city). So, I'm glad. I had a great time. :)

Cool! I've always wanted to do that kind of driving w/ a cop in the car. The other thing I always wanted to do was to take part in those police-sponsored drunk driving things where you drink and then drive with them on a course. I am convinced that I would do a great job, even impaired!!!
