Mids

I am officially a vampire today.

For 3 months, at least, I'll be working from 11pm to 7am. I've worked this shift before, and it's definitely a unique shift. I think I really am going to enjoy watching the sun rise every day. Last night I worked an off duty shift, for a total of 13.5 hours (worked from 6pm to 7:30am). I was working at the apple store, which requires no real work, because nobody's there. I sat down and watched the sun rise, alone. It was amazing watching it turn from black, to purple, to pink, to yellow. I would look down at a book for maybe 2 minutes, and when I looked up, the sky was a different shade. It's not like watching the sun set. Sunset colors are just different. The feel is different. The beginning of a new day is more beautiful, somehow.

So, the midnight shift is more arrests than anything. DUI's come out of this shift most often. I need to freshen up on my technique of DUI tests. Traffic stops are a little different. You're not necessarily stopping the soccer moms anymore. I'm excited for the shift. I'm excited for my new sergeant. Sergeant Smith is definitely my favorite. So, it'll be good. :)

And I love the midnight shift because I feel like I have so much more time to myself at home than I do when I'm on evenings. On evenings, it feels as though as soon as I wake up, I know I have to be back to work in a couple hours. When I'm on mids, I wake up at 4pm or so, and I know that I have until 10pm before I need to head to work to get ready, which seems so much later. I like it. :)

We'll see how I feel after a few months of being on this shift. :P

I've heard a lot of cops say that they prefer that shift. Me, not so much. I burned out on the swing shift, 3:15-11:15pm after less than 2 years.
